Bold and Bright
Their Story
A Fairytale in Yellow
––Greta Weiderman
A bright yellow bouquet, matching satin shoes, a vintage inspired dress and a bracelet made from a antique broach were just a few of the fearless features of Karly and Keegan Combest’s May 30 wedding this year.
“I always kind of knew that I wanted an elaborate, different wedding,” Karly said. She didn’t want a tiara, a big veil or a poufy dress.
Karly’s bouquet was made out of yellow calla lilies, ranunculus, billie balls, orchids, peonies and large tea leaves that were rolled over. Florist Tammie Lawson tied it with a charcoal colored ribbon.
“I didn’t want any roses because that’s too typical,” Karly said.
Karly chose yellow and charcoal as her wedding colors. “My favorite color is actually pink, but Keegan’s favorite color is yellow,” she said. She thought yellow would look cheery and springy.Finding just the right wedding gown was Karly’s biggest challenge of planning her wedding. She tried on at least 50 dresses at five or so shops before she settled on a La Sposa gown with a high halter neckline and delicate lace, beading, pearls and crystals. “It was different, but it was classic,” Karly said. |

She also wore a French netting or birdcage veil for a vintage look. “I wanted something that would give some drama and something different,” she said. Her mom, Teri Crapse, made the cloth flower she wore in her hair out of pearls, ostrich feathers and Swarovski crystals.
Keegan was impressed with Karly’s overall bridal look. He said his favorite part of the wedding was seeing her for the first time. “She was facing away from me and toward the alter – just seeing her dress for the first time and being the only ones in the church, it was just a great feeling,” he said.
“Just seeing her in the light and everything, it’s something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”
At the reception, the dramatic yellow cake and centerpieces stole the show.
Yellow flowers filled centerpieces, some in tall Eiffel vases, others in cylinders filled with lemons.
L.A. Gourmet Catering served teriyaki-marinated beef tenderloin, apricot-glazed chicken and goat cheese salad with strawberries and candied walnuts. There was also an eloté bar with sweet corn cut fresh off the cob served in martini glasses and topped with sour cream, guacamole, seasonings and tortilla chips. A delicious side dish was the ultimate comfort food - gourmet macaroni and cheese. |

Bonnie Samson, of Tolono, created the three-tiered cake and repeated a swirling design from the invitations. It was lemon flavored with lemon filling.
Karly and Keegan served a bar of yellow candies at their reception. Their guests were invited to fill small Chinese takeout boxes with candy. The labels on the boxes read “It was so sweet of you to come.”
“I love candy, absolutely love, love, love candy,” Karly said.
The candy bar was a hit. All the candy was gone by the time dinner was served, Karly said. |

Her Dress
Vintage Inspired

There were blue skies at West Side Park in Champaign on Karly’s wedding day. Her something old was her grandmother’s engagement ring, which she wore on her right hand – it’s a similar square design to her own; her something new was her vintage-inspired dress; her something borrowed was her mom’s handkerchief that she carried around her bouquet; and her something blue was her panties!
Karly wore Nina brand yellow shoes on her wedding day, which she ordered online. She had bought ivory shoes, too. “I almost talked myself out of wearing the yellow shoes. I’m so glad I didn’t wear the ivory shoes,” she said. “It would have been too boring.” Even her garter was yellow.

Ardor for Allerton Park
Their Story
Benjamin Lapid
––Elyse Russo
For Greg and Cara Daniel, Allerton Park in Monticello is an incredibly special place; it’s where they had one of their first dates, fell in love and eventually got engaged.
“That’s when I knew I loved him, at Allerton Park,” Cara said about Greg.
To complete the couple’s Allerton love story, Greg and Cara naturally chose to have their wedding ceremony at the University-owned park. Followed by a reception at the Laborers International Union Hall in Urbana, the Daniels’ wedding day last fall was an elegant black and white affair amid the pastoral prairie backdrop of outdoor Illinois.
The couple’s black and white theme was present in everything, including Cara’s wedding dress. She sketched a version of the gown she imagined herself wearing on her big day, but after visiting 13 bridal stores in three states, she could not find what she was looking for. So, she purchased a simple mermaid-style gown at a sample sale and added the black details.
“My grandma, mom and I sewed all the pleats for the pleated trim and train,” Cara said, adding that a seamstress helped to complete the dress. A vision in black and white, Cara’s gown only cost $500 total. This do-it-yourself bride also made her veil and feathery headpiece as well as the black and white programs and menus.
The black and white theme carried over to the bridesmaid dresses – which were black – and the groomsmen’s suits – which were black with white shirts. But these black outfits popped with the addition of Gerber daisies in orange, red and pink, Cara’s favorite flower. Each bridesmaid carried one color of Gerber daisy, and the groomsmen had orange, red and pink ties to match, which was Greg’s idea. The guys who wore red ties were St. Louis Cardinal’s fans, and the guys who wore orange ties were Illini sports fans, Greg said.
The Gerber daisies and the black and white theme were also present in the couple’s wedding cake. Cara said the four-tier cake was trimmed with the black pleats to match her dress.
“Each tier was a different flavor,” Greg said, recalling the four varieties: carrot cake, chocolate cake, white cake with raspberry filling and chocolate-cappuccino cake. The cake was served after a buffet-style dinner of teriyaki beef sirloin and lemon pepper chicken, Greg said.
Reflecting on their wedding, which was on Sept. 6, 2008, Cara and Greg Daniel both said the ceremony, at their favorite Allerton Park, was the best part of their wedding day. Specifically, Greg’s favorite part was watching Cara walk down the aisle.
The Daniels live in St. Joseph with their rottweiler Cujo, Yorkshire terrier J.D. and cat London.
